Lobotomy for Beginners by ~McClelland:iconMcClelland:

It wasn’t the windowless room,
the edges of the walls mixing with harsh light
while waiting for the doctor’s knock.
Or the sweat-leather straps and buckles braided into her hair.

It wasn’t the operating utensils on the steel tray,
the scalpel that looked more like a butter knife
and the drill plugged in, lying on the floor.
Or even the way the doctor complimented her posture,
as if a stiff chin was more valuable than a working brain.

And it wasn’t the taste of copper that filled her mouth
before she closed her eyes, not wanting to see
him squint at the black dot sketched
in the center of her forehead
before picking at it like a tender scab.

It was the way she sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,”
forcing words out after each prod of the ice pick, soft lips flinching
until the tool garbled her song to silence
and the surgery finally stopped.

oh.
that's amazing.
and very uncomfortable. as in powerful, and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
well done
:iconmcclelland:
good, it's written to make you want to crawl out of your own skin. true story, too - or partially.
:iconl-a-u-r-a-laura:
it worked :)

and i thought i faved it! but apparantly not.

yeah i wondered if was something like that, with the name and all. its interesting, and moving.
once again, really well done!
:iconl-a-u-r-a-laura:
oh, i just read about her. its horrible.
'when she became incoherent, they stopped.'

I've read this over a few times. Makes the skin on my arms itch a little. The last stanza especially, but I also liked

"and the drill plugged in, lying on the floor."

and

"before picking at it like a tender scab."

There's a description in the comments that fits perfectly... this makes me want to crawl out of my own skin. It makes me uncomfortable and for this kind of writing, that's very perfect... very, very...

Yeah, it makes me edgy and want to scratch my own skin off. Excellent piece of writing...

Congrats on the DD on this piece!

I know you stay true when my world is false
Everything around's breaking down to chaos

Between Places: everything you know is only a dream - a fantasy graphic novel

Wow--so simple, yet so elegant.

...and the title ties it all together so nicely...

Great work!

Epiphany: a sudden and powerful understanding of something previously misinterpreted.

I want to spawn epiphanies in every generation.

That is truly incredible.
I think I should ask your permission; in my English Literature class, we're studying poetry. Would it be alright with you if I took this into class to share with my classmates?
As an aside, is the "My Country 'Tis of Thee" you mentioned the same "'Tis of Thee" by Ani DiFranco? If so, I love that song.

Have you seen it? It's great, they've got stuff!
:iconparentheses:
I felt I had to look up Rosemary Kennedy after this; that's such a sad story. :( Your poem perfectly captures the horror of it all. Thank you for posting it, and congratulations on the well-deserved DD.
